TikTok enjoyers awoke this morning to a Canadian concoction of early 2000s pop-punk madness, as Avril Lavigne revisited the spot where the Let Go album cover was shot to recreate the image 20 years later, while soundtracked by Simple Plan's "I'm Just a Kid."
The TikTok, posted last night (June 28), saw the singer transition from the iconic 2002 image of the moody 17-year-old to her current-day self at a Canal Street crosswalk in New York — the exact intersection where she shot the cover.
The soundtrack cameo from (now notoriously Canada-skipping) Simple Plan, who also released their debut album No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls in 2002, has been part of a trend in which TikTok users recreate old photos. While the Quebec band's fearless leader Pierre Bouvier has been doing some quite literal shitposting, Lavigne launched her account on the platform last year with ultimate "Sk8er Boi" Tony Hawk.
Check out the video below. Caution: pop-punk feelings may arise.
Earlier this month, the singer delivered a deluxe edition of her 2002 debut in celebration of its 20th anniversary, with new B-sides such as "Get Over It" and "Make Up," ahead of releasing a surprisingly faithful rendition of Adele's "Hello" and an acoustic version of the title track of new album Love Sux for Spotify's Singles series last week.
