Netflix has announced that it has acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company, three years after partnering with the company to adapt the British novelist's works for new children's programming.
In 2018, Netflix shared that the partnership would see Dahl's beloved characters from stories including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda, The Twits and more adapted for an animated "story universe." Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Two projects highlighted by the streamer that are currently in the works include a Taika Waititi and Phil Johnston-led series based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and an adaptation of 2011's Matilda The Musical involving Sony and Working Title.
Those productions have led Netflix "to a much more ambitious venture — the creation of a unique universe across animated and live-action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theatre, consumer products and more."
Dahl's books have been translated into 63 languages and have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide. Works that have previously been adapted for film and television include Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda, Esio Trot and The Witches.
Last year, Dahl's family and the Roald Dahl Story Company made a belated apology for the author's history of anti-Semitism, writing that they "deeply apologize for the lasting and understandable hurt caused by some of Roald Dahl's statements."
Earlier this year, it was reported that Timothée Chalamet will play Willy Wonka in a forthcoming film.
