Backxwash came storming back last spring with the eight-minute epic "WAKE UP," and subsequently revealed that she would be releasing a new album in February 2025. Much like Lady Gaga, she was just off by a month — the dauntless Montreal artist and producer otherwise known as Ashanti Mutinta has now announced Only Dust Remains, which is set to arrive March 28 via her own Ugly Hag label imprint.
Only Dust Remains marks Backxwash's first full-length since ending her seminal trilogy with 2022's HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING. Its first instalment, 2020's God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It, landed her the Polaris Prize and is among Exclaim!'s best albums of the 2020s so far.
According to a press release, the new record embraces a more complex and melodic soundscape, as well as wordy, poetic verses on themes of mourning, reflection and hope. Details currently remain scarce, but a new single from Only Dust Remains is scheduled to arrive sometime next month. In the meantime, you can revisit "WAKE UP" below.
