Just days after the release of his latest opus Dawn FM, the Weeknd is teasing fans by suggesting that the project is part of a larger body of work — namely, a "new trilogy."
"I wonder... did you know you're experiencing a new trilogy?," the artist born Abel Tesfaye wrote cryptically on Twitter this afternoon, instantly re-contextualizing Dawn FM's place in his discography.
Obviously, he has a soft spot for things happening in three: the Toronto musician originally rose to notoriety with 2012's Deftones-influenced Trilogy, which compiled his three 2011 mixtapes — House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence.
The idea of this latest record being part of a three-piece also makes sense when you think about it: Tesfaye (or his character) probably ended up dying after the frenzied trip of 2020's After Hours, from which the smash single "Blinding Lights" was recently crowned the No.1 Billboard Hot 100 Song of All Time. Now, Dawn FM finds him in dancing through purgatory as the second instalment in the saga.
What's next? Well, if we're going by the Catholic manual, it should be heaven; but Starboy has never been one to play by the book, so we'll have to wait and see.

Maybe this explains why the Weeknd says it doesn't matter if Dawn FM gets a physical release — because it might be repackaged as part of the new trilogy somewhere down the line. This latest instalment in the apparent trilogy made Exclaim!'s 32 Most Anticipated Canadian Albums of 2022.
