In a huge milestone for Toronto's own Starboy, the Weeknd's (née Abel Tesfaye) propulsive hit "Blinding Lights" has been crowned the new No.1 on Billboard's Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Songs.
Updated yesterday (November 23) based on historical performance on the weekly Hot 100 chart, the 2019 single dethroned Chubby Checker's dance craze-inducing "The Twist" to nab the top spot. The '60s classic had topped Billboard's list since it was first revealed in 2008 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hot 100, maintaining its status through updates to the survey in both 2013 and 2018.
As the lead single from the Weeknd's 2020 LP After Hours, "Blinding Lights" topped the Hot 100 for four weeks in April and May of 2020. Furthermore, it went on to shatter records for most weeks spent in the chart's top five (43), top 10 (57), top 40 (86) and on the chart overall (90).
"I don't think [it] has hit me yet," the artist told Billboard upon learning the news in an interview. "I try not to dwell on it too much. I just count my blessings, and I'm just grateful."
Billboard's methodology is based on historical performance on their weekly Hot 100 chart — from its inception on August 4, 1958, through to November 6 of this year. The songs are ranked using an inverse points system that gives weeks spent at No.1 the greatest value (and lower positions earn the least). In its history, nearly 30,000 songs have charted on the Hot 100.
Other songs that made rank in the Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Songs include "How Do I Live" by LeAnn Rimes, Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk (ft. Bruno Mars)" and the hottest one of all: Santana's "Smooth (ft. Rob Thomas)." The top ten also sees appearances from the likes of LMFAO, the Black Eyed Peas and Ed Sheeran.
If the Weeknd wasn't already a bonafide household name, this accomplishment should certainly cement his status.
