Hear the Week's Best New Canadian Music: Backxwash, Sum 41, Kathleen Edwards, Jessie Reyez

BY Exclaim! StaffPublished Mar 28, 2025

We've nearly made it to the end of March, and so far, only one Christian rock band frontman has been revealed to be in-laws with the Trump official who added the journalist to the war plans group chat. There's a timeline not too far off from ours in which this is impressive! What's also impressive is, as per usual, the week's best new Canadian music.

Ahead of their last-ever performance at this weekend's JUNO Awards, Sum 41 have their last recorded hurrah by covering Rage Against the Machine's "Lay Down in the Fire" for Spotify Singles, while Kathleen Edwards covers Jason Isbell — and he sings on it, too.

It's a heavy week in album releases (both literally and figuratively), with the arrival of new records from Backxwash and Jessie Reyez, as well as Destroyer's return to bombast (Dan's Boogie). More new albums come courtesy of Gloin with All of your anger is actually shame (and I bet that makes you angry), Bria Salmena (Big Dog), Population II, Aqyila, and Sam Roberts Band, in addition to a fresh compilation by Toronto's Halocline Trance label.

Elsewhere, LAL gets remixed, and Foxwarren reunite for their upcoming sophomore album, 2. Lowest of the Low are also back, while Allison Russell joins forces with the legendary Annie Lennox on "Superlover."

Everyone's invited in on the action with The Eh! List below, presented by Mary Brown's Chicken — all Canadian and proud of it!
