Chappell Roan got a crash course in Canadian music lore courtesy of Nardwuar, who informed her about Orville Peck's early punk band and gave her a copy of one of Grimes's earliest albums. Nard also name-dropped Sloan's Chris Murphy — and Murphy has now responded.
The shoutout concerned Murphy's past comment to Nardwuar that many hit songs were written in a minor key. Roan didn't discuss Sloan directly, but shared her opinion that it's often easier to write in a minor key. (As Canadian pianist Robin Hatch pointed out in the comments section, all of Roan's best-known songs are in a major key.)
Murphy shared the shoutout on Instagram, writing, "I am not detecting any recognition in the face of Ms. Roan as Nardwuar introduces Sloan to the conversation but it is a thrill that Nard shoehorned Sloan into an interview with her in 2024 when her star is shining so brightly — not to mention his!!!"
He added, "This would be like Dick Cavett bringing up Bob Wills to David Bowie in 1972 and asking what Bowie thought of the King of Western Swing's prediction that country and western music would eventually come together in one chart."
Murphy capped off the post by congratulating both Roan and Nard on "being so out there and successful on their own terms."
