Makaya McCraven took his organic beat music to new heights on 2018's Universal Beings, and the Chicago drummer/producer has now shared news of an addendum record for the collection, which will also score a new documentary.
Universal Beings E&F Sides will arrive digitally on July 31 through International Anthem, with vinyl and CD versions following on September 25. The effort features 14 new tracks cut from the original album sessions, prepared and produced by McCraven to soundtrack the Universal Beings documentary film.
Directed by Mark Pallman, the documentary follows McCraven to California, Chicago, London and New York City for a behind-the-scenes look at the album's creation, while also examining the bandleader's life, creative process and the community of musicians involved on Universal Beings.
You can find new song "Mak Attack" and a documentary teaser below. Fans of McCraven's work will be familiar with the similar E&F side treatment he gave his acclaimed 2015 album In the Moment. That original album was paired with its addendum effort for a Deluxe Edition reissue last year.
Exclaim! named Universal Beings one of the Top 10 Experimental & Modern Composition Albums of 2018. Earlier this year, he reworked Gil Scott-Heron's final album for We're New Again.
