fanclubwallet — the lo-fi project of Ottawa's Hannah Judge — has detailed the release of her debut album, alongside sharing new single "Gr8 Timing!"
You Have Got to Be Kidding Me arrives May 20 via AWAL. It comes hot on the heels of last year's Hurt Is Boring EP, which made Exclaim!'s 25 Best EPs of 2021. Late 2021 single "That I Won't Do" will appear on the LP, alongside "Gr8 Timing!" and 10 other new tracks.
"I think I spend a lot of time trying to be like the cool, chill, calm girl," Judge said in a release. "This album's kind of me being like, 'Maybe I'm not cool, calm and collected.'"
Two years ago at the beginning of the pandemic, Judge began piecing together this coming-of-age body of work. She had just dropped out of university, broken up with her boyfriend and moved back in with her parents, with a goal of working on comics.
Judge was listening to a lot of Tegan and Sara when she was writing these songs, because she was also watching a lot of Grey's Anatomy: "Tegan and Sara are on every episode of Grey's Anatomy for some reason," the singer-songwriter noted. She and producer/childhood friend Michael Watson finished You Have Got to Be Kidding Me at a remote recording studio in Port William Sound, spending 10-hour days putting the final touches on the album without distraction.
The result is an introspective yet hopeful collection of slightly off-kilter slacker rock with biting hooks and sardonicism. Look no further than the turbulent, self-deprecating humour of her newest single, which delivers lines like: "I deserve to be with someone who hurts me / So I'll spend all my time with myself."
Whether it's lyrical or musical punches, fanclubwallet is here to pull none.
