Last year, it was revealed that director Eli Roth would direct a film adaptation of Borderlandsand another star has now been attached to the project.

Kevin Hart has closed a deal to star in the Borderlands adaptation alongside Cate Blanchett, whose involvement was confirmed last May.

In the film, Hart will play the role of soldier-turned-mercenary Roman, while Blanchett has been tapped to play protagonist Lilith. For Hart, his part is said to be "a more serious acting turn" when compared to his usual comedic offerings.

"I'm thrilled to be working with Kevin," said Roth in a statement [via The Hollywood Reporter]. "Borderlands is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they've never seen before. He's going to be an amazing Roland."

As previously reported, the Borderlands adaptation will be produced by Erik Feig, Avi and Ari Arad, while Chernobyl's Craig Mazin will write the screenplay. The film will be executive produced by Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford and Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive.

The Borderlands film will follow the events of the series' 2009 debut; set in a distant future where four "Vault Hunters" battle corporations and military forces in search of alien technologies on planet Pandora. The franchise's most recent game, Borderlands 3, was released in September 2019.

Hart was in Toronto late last year shooting forthcoming title The Man from Toronto. Earlier this month, he inked a four-movie deal with Netflix.
