In March, it was revealed that California-based developer Naughty Dog would adapt popular PlayStation title The Last of Us into a series for HBO, and the forthcoming production now has a director for its pilot episode.
In conversation with DiscussingFilm, Johan Renck (Chernobyl) revealed he had been tapped to direct the series pilot. Renck's involvement marks another team-up with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, who is at work on the series alongside The Last of Us game writer and creative director Neil Druckmann.
"I'm an executive producer on it and attached to it. It's an ongoing TV series," Renck confirmed to the site. "I'm part of that series and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we'll see how it goes on further."
First arriving on PlayStation 3 in 2013, The Last of Us follows protagonist Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. The game was remastered for release on PlayStation 4 in 2014 and will see the release of the highly anticipated sequel The Last of Us II on June 19.
"Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus," Mazin said of the source material in a statement in March. "Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil."
Naughty Dog are also adapting their Uncharted game series for the screen.
