Yes, Chris Martin is once again saying things: the frontman has been known to make a retirement claim or two (or a decade's worth), as well as lament the devastating blow to his self-worth in the absence of Wembley Stadium telling him he's awesome — and now he's traced back the band's origins to a scene from the beloved 1985 cult classic.
Martin appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show earlier this week, where he and the host discussed their shared love of performing cover songs. One of the Coldplay bandleader's favourite instances of playing music that wasn't his own was when Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox joined the band onstage back in 2016 at New York's MetLife Stadium to play a couple songs from the film.
"My No. 1, probably, is [when] Michael J. Fox came and played two of the songs from Back to the Future with us; that was really wonderful," Martin said. "Him coming to play 'Johnny B. Goode' and stuff, that was wonderful."
Getting to perform the Chuck Berry hit with Fox was also a full-circle moment for the musician.
"That's what made me want to be in a band — that scene," he explained, referring to the part of the film where Marty McFly plays "Johnny B. Goode" for a 1955 audience that isn't quite ready for rock 'n' roll.
"I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet," Fox's character says, "but your kids are gonna love it."
Perhaps the same could be said for Coldplay's latest emoji-laden album?
Martin has also revealed that the band have tried to write five James Bond themes — and they only have until 2025 to crack the code on making some movie magic of their own.
