Wisconsin duo Peaking Lights' third album after last year's critically acclaimed 936 LP arrives June 19 on Mexican Summer. With Lucifer, which is now available online to stream, the married couple continues to balance their hazy hippie aesthetic with a penchant for motorik loops.
Most of the tracks are over five minutes, but Peaking Lights manage not to shoot out too far into the stratosphere, keeping things somewhat grounded with dub basslines and electronic beats. "Beautiful Son" seems to be a winking acknowledgement of their reputation for sun-kissed melodies, while "LO Hi" appears to nod to their lo-fi roots and new comparatively cleaned-up sound. Meanwhile, "Dream Beat" wonderfully incorporates all the group's best qualities, from pop to reggae to Krautrock.
