Matthew Monias — a.k.a. Garden Hill First Nation-hailing producer, vocalist and Exclaim! New Fave Mattmac — is having a hell of a year. Fresh off his nomination for Indigenous Artist of the Year at the 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards, the Manitoba artist continues to rise with the release of the video for recent single "Run It," featuring Winnipeg rapper (and fellow New Fave) Caid Jones.
Melodic tones meld with propulsive vibrations from the 808s to backtrack Mattmac's heartfelt storytelling across the track, as he and Jones and celebrate their early successes in the music industry. As Monias's audience grows, so does his drive to offer a visual representation of his blindness, as exemplified in the new clip's hazy visuals.
The video is set in a glow-in-the-dark world created by Winnipeg-based filmmakers NSTY, with a backdrop by visual artist Peatr Thomas. The "Run It" clip teems with black light, multi-coloured fluorescent graffiti and silhouetted figures — it's sensory overload in the best way. Killer dance moves come from Winnipeg's TikTok-famous sibling trio Mikey, Jacob and Cieanna Harris.
