Joanna Newsom released her excellent album Divers exactly a year ago today (on October 23, 2015), and to celebrate, she shared an unreleased tune from the album's recording sessions called "Make Hay."
Her label Drag City Records posted the tune on YouTube along with the following caption:
Joanna Newsom friends and faithful, we wish you a happy first AnniDIVERSary! The standard gift for the occasion is a timepiece, but watch out — here's a piece of time out of time that you'll never not have back again! Recorded for the "Divers" album, this represents the rarest of all birds: an actual unreleased outtake recorded at a Joanna Newsom session.
The tune is classic Newsom, with piano chords fleshed out by plinky overdubs and the songwriter's pastoral imagery delivered in her distinct croon. Newsom plays piano, celeste and Wurlitzer on the track.
It's accompanied by a simple lyric video. Check it out below.
