Grimes Says She's Been "Making Music for the First Time in Ages," Forgot That It's "Very Fun"

She recently said the follow-up to 2020's 'Miss Anthropocene' is late due to "minor legal stuff"

Grimes has done and said a whole lot of stuff in the past couple years — blocked Alice Glass on Twitter, got some facial surgery, trashed Mark Zuckerberg, beat up a TikTok star, dated and broke up with Chelsea Manning, admitted to hacking a now-defunct indie blog — but she hasn't released all that much music.

In January, she delayed her allegedly upcoming album — Entitled BOOK 1 and possibly about militarized AI courtesans — citing "minor legal stuff" while also calling music "[her] side quest now."

"I owe y'all, the artists life is blessed and I take that seriously. But! My fam, best friends, and babies get dragged in no matter what i do, the narrative doesn't belong to me," she tweeted at the time, though she included that she'll "still release BOOK 1 & more."

Given her take on it — and, honestly, everyone else's — it seems like Grimes the outrage-and-eyeroll machine has overtaken Grimes the musician in a way that's made her (and, again, everyone else) wary about the whole enterprise.

However, if a recent tweet is any indication, it seems like Grimes is maybe finding her way back to the music. Yesterday, she took to Twitter to share that she was "making music for the first time in ages," and that she'd forgotten that "this is very fun." That sounds like progress!

It's hard to trust too much of what comes out of Grimes' mouth (or her Twitter feed) these days, but maybe we'll get new music of some sort sooner than we think. Most recently, she popped up on Caroline Polachek's fantastic Desire, I Want to Turn into You, singing with Dido on "Fly to You."
