Before procreating with a billionaire (twice), Grimes was mostly known for her experimental pop music. While her body modification plans and metaverse theories have been more prominent in the news cycle as of late, the artist born Claire Boucher has long been teasing a new album, too.
Entitled BOOK 1 and possibly about militarized AI courtesans, it will mark her first full-length since 2020's Miss Anthropocene — but she's not in any hurry to release it because she says music has become her "side quest."
Grimes took to the social media platform that her ex is currently the overlording (you know, as one does) to give her fans an update on the album's progress for the first time since claiming she had finished it in recovery from her surgery in September.
"I know BOOK 1 is so late," she wrote. "reason is minor legal stuff, but moreso… fame and notoriety is a unique hell," the musician explained. "Not to say life isn't blessed and my GOD ten time better = I'm the luckiest girl on earth, but do I want the attention an album brings? 100% nooo (with all due respect).
"Ofc I'll still release BOOK 1 & more. I owe y'all, the artists life is blessed and I take that seriously. But! My fam, best friends, and babies get dragged in no matter what i do, the narrative doesn't belong to me," Grimes said, perhaps referring to the one in Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto.
"I'll always release music but if it hasn't been clear ; music is my side quest now," she added, explaining that she needs "reduced pressure" and "increased freedom" around her releases to make them feel less high-stakes and invasive. After all, the singer-songwriter has been complaining about having "literally zero interest" in being famous anymore since 2021, when she also anointed herself as pop stan culture's Marie Antoinette.

If we're to believe previous Twitter dispatches, whenever it does come out, BOOK 1 is set to include 2021's "Player of Games" as well as an oft-teased collaboration with the Weeknd called "Sci-Fi" (because of course).
