Al Green has shared a cover of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," marking his first new material in five years. You can hear the soul and gospel legend's take on Reed's solo song below.
Arriving today via Fat Possum Records, Green's take on Reed's Transformer track was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording studio in Memphis, TN, with members of the Hi Rhythm Section — the house band behind many of Green's enduring '70s soul hits.
"I loved Lou's original 'Perfect Day,'" Green shared in a statement. "The song immediately puts you in a good mood. We wanted to preserve that spirit, while adding our own sauce and style."
Green's cover arrives in tandem with some newly announced live dates in the US, with more shows to be announced as the artist's "next season is underway," per a release.
Here's hoping Green includes Canada on the itinerary, considering his recordings have been named among Exclaim! staffers' perfect fall albums and favourite love songs.
Prior to the arrival of "Perfect Day," Green shared a cover of Linda Martell's "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" in 2018, which at the time marked his first new material since 2008 album Lay It Down.
