The years start coming and they don't stop coming, and neither do the reboots. While ruminations on Shrek 5 have been happening for some time now, it's been confirmed that the franchise's original cast is negotiating a reunion for the occasion.
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri spilled the beans while speaking with Variety about The Super Mario Bros. Movie, revealing the animation studio may be collaborating with Dreamworks to not only reboot the 2001 classic, but grant Eddie Murphy's wish for a Donkey reboot.
"It's not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with Mario where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honour those core elements," Meledandri said. "And then you're hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."
According to Meledandri, the original cast, including Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Murphy, are pumped: "Every indication that we've gotten is there's tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return." Apparently, all that glitters is gold.
Shrek isn't the only Dreamworks or Illumination franchise that may be treated to another sequel — Despicable Me, Sing! and The Secret Life of Pets will apparently also be followed-up soon.
