'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Trailer Is Like Watching Your Friend Play Video Games

Chris Pratt's super-weird Mario voice is finally here

Have you ever wanted to watch a Mario Bros. cut scene but without a game to play when it's over? You're in luck, because the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here.

The trailer features Jack Black very much owning his role as the voice of Bowser, and Chris Pratt's version of Mario sounding every bit as ill-fitting as everyone expected. Unfortunately, Seth Rogen's Donkey Kong doesn't appear.

But regardless of the voice acting, the lasting impression left by the trailer is: who would ever want to watch this thing? There hasn't been a proper mainline Mario game since 2017's Super Mario Odyssey (unless you account for the admittedly very fun mini-game Bowser's Fury), so The Super Mario Bros. Movie mostly just looks like the cut scene from a video game that ought to exist. It also feels a bit like watching your friend play video games but not getting a turn yourself.

Watch it below, if you're into that sort of thing.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is due out on April 7, 2023. The voice cast is rounded out by Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key and Fred Armisen. It's directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
