If you finished watching Danny McBride's latest HBO project The Righteous Gemstones, you're surely still trying to get "Misbehavin'" out of your head. The Christian-country showstopper, performed in character by Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles and Walton Goggins, was an undeniable series highlight, and the song has now received an official release.
Both the Nettles-led "Misbehavin' (1989)" and the original version that made Aimee-Leigh Gemstone and Baby Billy Freeman child stars are now on streaming services, complete with corresponding artwork and artist pages. As of press time, the page for Goggins's fictional character already has over 18,000 monthly listeners.
As reported by Fast Company last month, "Misbehavin'" was written by McBride, writer and co-star Edi Patterson, and composer Jospeh Stephens specifically for the show.
"The first day when Jennifer [Nettles] and Walton [Goggins] performed it, people were walking around on their phones trying to find the song on iTunes or whatever," Patterson told the site. "Because they didn't understand, they thought like, 'Oh, this must be an old song that exists.' I kept having to tell numerous people that definitely, 'Oh no, this is a brand-new song.'"
McBride added, "It felt like this song was so necessary for the world of the Gemstones. That song, in essence, sums up what the whole show is about. Don't do bad things and fuck around — or bad things will happen to you."
The Righteous Gemstones stars McBride, Goggins, Patterson, Adam Devine and John Goodman as a world-famous televangelist family. Last month, the show was renewed for a second season.
