Danny McBride's The Righteous Gemstones continues to be one of the greatest TV shows going, and among the series guest stars for Season 3 is Sturgill Simpson, who took the spotlight on last night's episode in covering a country classic.

Without spoiling the series so far: Simpson appears in the newest season of Gemstones as Brother Marshall, a member of a backwoods Christian militia led by Peter Montgomery (Steve Zahn), a snake-handling preacher with a short fuse.

Up to this point in the series, the country singer's character had few lines, but in last night's episode, Montgomery asks Brother Marshall to lead his congregation in singing a cover of "All the Gold in California," the 1979 song from Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers Band.

The scene itself is out there online if you search hard enough, but as Stereogum points out, the studio version of Simpson's cover has received a release via DSPs, credited to Brother Marshall and the Choir of Fire. You can compare and contrast both Brother Marshall and the Gatlin Brothers' takes below.

It isn't the first time the music of The Righteous Gemstones has landed on streaming services, and
it also won't be the last we'll see of Simpson onscreen. In 2021, it was reported that the artist was cast in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.

Simpson's most recent album remains 2011's The Ballad of Dood and Juanita. This year, he teamed with Diplo as Johnny Blue Skies to cover Bedouin Soundclash's "Brutal Hearts."
