The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) has announced that the 21C Music Festival will return to Toronto's Koerner Hall this winter for its 11th annual concert series.
Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say will kick off the festivities on January 19, leading the way for six more concerts stretching into the spring, when returning act the Kronos Quartet will bring the fest to a close.
In the interim, London, ON-born violinist Lara St. John, Bridget Kibbey and the Calidore String Quartet, Brad Mehldau and Laurie Anderson are set to perform.
Special performances featured as part of the fest include Kibbey (on harp) and the Calidore String Quartet playing a musical rendition of Edgar Allen Poe's 1842 short story The Masque of the Red Death, as well as the 21C: Afterhours showcase of adventurous music. This year, Afterhours will include Tania León's Indígena, Žibuoklė Martinaitytė's Ping Pong Concerto, Chaya Czernowin's Habekhi and Pierre Jodlowski's Reprise.
Courtesy of the aforementioned artists, 21C's 2024 edition will include seven concerts and over 14 premieres, 13 of which are new to Canada.
