The Residents Take 'Theory of Obscurity' on North American Tour

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jan 26, 2016

Beyond a few recent reissues, occulus-masked avant-garde weirdos the Residents haven't issued a full-length release since 2013's Mush-Room. They do, however, have a new documentary titled Theory of Obscurity ready to screen, and they'll do so on their forthcoming North American tour.

The mystery-shrouded rock experimentalists revealed their travel plans today (January 26) over Facebook, confirming that the trek will find them both playing a set and screening filmmaker Don Hardy's Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents, which had premiered at SXSW in 2015.

"Normally we don't allow opening acts but when it's a film about us, we say let's double your pleasure," the act wrote in their post.

Officially dubbed the "Shadowland/ToO North American Spring 2016 Tour," the trek kicks off in California in early April, with the first Canadian stop taking place at Vancouver's Rio Theatre on April 14.

Additional up-north appearances are set to take place in Toronto and Montreal, but it's noted that the Toronto stop at Adelaide Hall on April 21 will be the only evening to not feature a screening of Theory of Obscurity. For this, the band offer the following apology: "Sorry dudes."

Hardy's film traces the over 40-year history of the Residents, a band who have quite successfully maintained a career in outsider art rock without revealing their identities to the public. Even when their iconic eyeball masks get stolen!

The film was funded through Indiegogo and features interviews with project members, as well as fans such as Primus' Les Claypool, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Henry Cow's Chris Cutler, Dean Ween, Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison, and illusionist Penn Jillette.
