It's a great day for Abel fans and Opium heads (the label, not the drug).
Earlier this month, the Weeknd debuted seven new songs at his concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as part of the leadup to his upcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow. Today, the artist born Abel Tesfaye has released perhaps one the most anticipated of the previewed songs, "Timeless," featuring Playboi Carti.
This marks their second collaboration following "Popular," a song most synonymous with the Weeknd's controversial HBO series, The Idol. This time with fewer controversies and more star power, "Timeless" features an impressive production team, including Mike Dean, Ojivolta and Pharrell Williams.
The duo rap/sing on an energetic synth-filled beat, featuring Playboi Carti's idiosyncratic vocal delivery and melodic chops coming from the Weeknd. The lyrics are as braggious as you would expect, with Carti name-dropping designer brands like Rick Owens and Comme Des Garcons. We also get ingenious lines such as, "Ever since I was a jit, knew I was the shit"
Hurry Up Tomorrow will mark the final part of the Weeknd's trilogy album run, after After Hours in 2021 and 2022's Dawn FM.
As for Carti, fans are happy to see what seems to be the resurrection of the Die Lit star, following earlier this month's release of his latest single, "All Red" — the first official featureless single in four years. Despite fans' outward frustration, Carti has been teasing a new album with not much detail nor any foreseeable release date. Whether this signifies we are closer to the end of the will-he, won't-he release of Music is hard to say.
But for now, you can enjoy "Timeless" below.
