Following last month's tragic passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and the continuous outpouring of support since, the first posthumous release from the late musician is now available.
Hawkins performed vocals on Edgar Winter's cover of Johnny Winter's "Guess I'll Go Away," which is included on the surviving Winter brother's tribute album Brother Johnny — out today via Quarto Valley Records.
In a note on his website, Winter said that, because of the unusual quality of the song, they wanted "a younger, more energetic, modern approach to the vocal."
"Our engineer, mixer, and producer (Ross Hogarth) had worked extensively with Taylor and they were very close friends," Winter continued. "When Ross suggested Taylor, being such a huge Foo Fighters fan, I said, 'WOW — how perfect.'"
In regards to the song, Winter added:
It's a song about the lure of sex, the danger of drugs, and the love of rock 'n' roll. Johnny wrote it around the time of his first rehab, and it expressed feelings almost everyone I know has been through in one way or another. I would guess, like almost all musicians, Taylor couldn't help but identify with it. All I know is he put his whole heart and soul into it, and I am so sad that I never found a way to thank him properly as he so deeply and profoundly deserved.
Hawkins' preliminary toxicology report found 10 substances in the drummer's system at the time of his death.
Listen to "Guess I'll Go Away" below.
Johnny Winter passed away back in 2014. Last Halloween, members of Metallica covered Edgar Winter's seasonally-appropriate opus "Frankenstein."
