Shawn Mendes has just released a new single "What the Hell Are We Dying For?" — his first new release in over a year. Using the wildfires as a metaphor, the song is about his reportedly tumultuous relationship with Camilla Cabello.
Mendes teased the song on Twitter hours before its release today at midnight: "Started writing this song yesterday morning with my friends in upstate Newyork & finished it only a few hours ago… Felt so important to me to share with you guys in real time."
The single art, a photo of the Manhattan skyline undercover of wildfire smoke, has been criticized by some fans as distasteful as New York City saw the worst air quality in the world due to the wildfires. Many interpreted this as Mendes capitalizing on the unfortunate event of the wildfires. However, Mendes also shared that he is donating to the Canadian Red Cross and encouraged fans to donate too.
