Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan has died, TMZ reports. He was 34.
UPDATE (10/1 4:42 p.m. ET): The rapper's cause of death has been revealed, with TMZ reporting that the Fulton County Medical Examiner in Georgia confirmed that he died from the effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine and promethazine. His death is being ruled an accident.
The artist born Dequantes Devontay Lamar died at his home today, according to his family, who are "heartbroken and shattered" by the news, and a representative for the Fulton County morgue told the tabloid.
No cause of death has been confirmed, but numerous sources — including some of Lamar's close friends — have suggested that he overdosed, with a screenshot of an Instagram DM from rapper and friend T.O. Green's verified account telling someone that it was a "bad pill" circulating on social media.
Boosie Badazz also tweeted that Lamar had overdosed, although he didn't specify the substances involved.
Rich Homie Quan rose to acclaim beginning with his 2013 single, "Type of Way," which peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. He had further success in 2015 with the track "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)," which hit No. 26 on the chart.
Alongside Young Thug, the rapper was also a core member of the hip-hop collective Rich Gang, which was launched by Birdman with the Future-featuring debut single "Tapout" at around the same time Lamar emerged as a prominent solo artist. (Originally composed of the Cash Money Records roster, current members of the ongoing side project include Jacquees, Rublow and Saxkboy KD.)
Despite not releasing his first and only studio album Rich as in Spirit on Motown Records until 2018, the rapper maintained a prolific output in his prime. His career was not unmarred by controversy, however; Lamar came under fire multiple times for questionable lyrics about rape and incest, as well as surrendering to a 2015 battery charge and getting arrested for drug possession in 2017. His most recent collection was the 2022 EP Family & Mula.
