Who the fuck are Bring Me the Horizon? That's the question Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith asked when playing along to BMTH's 2013 single "Can You Feel My Heart," while making the song way better in the process.
For Drumeo's webseries Hearing Songs for the First Time, Chad Smith listened to a drum-free version of "Can You Feel My Heart" and drummed along to it. While some drummers in the series have pretty much nailed the sound of the original, Smith wasn't even close, transforming the half-time stomp-clap of BMTH drummer Mat Nicholls into a thundering tom groove. He even added a gong!
Hot take: his version is way better than the original, his busier playing injecting way more energy into the song while toning down the melodrama. "I don't know if that's the approach at all, but it just seemed kind of like a good tribal-y thing would go with that," Smith reflected after playing the song.
He guessed that the song was by Ministry. After being informed it was Bring Me the Horizon, Smith responded, "Who the fuck is that?" Maybe he should read Exclaim!'s 2019 cover story?
