Montreal's Honeydrip Presents 'Exclaim! Mix 07'

BY Daryl KeatingPublished Feb 13, 2020

Montreal is rife with hidden talent, and we'd be remiss if we didn't bring you some of it. Next up in our Exclaim! Mix series is Honeydrip — an ear-catching up-and-comer whose selections are about as interesting as they come.

Born Tiana McLaughlan, Honeydrip cut her teeth at Concordia University's radio station, CJLO, where her weekly show Waves of Honey afforded her an opportunity to practise mixing and delve deep into the electronic music rabbit hole. You can now find that same show on n10.as (pronounced "antennas"), Montreal's preeminent internet radio station, where McLaughlan continues expand and explore the groovier, downtempo peripheries of dance music.

She's graced the stage at festivals like Igloofest, Piknic Électronik and Nano Mutek, but we found her in a Toronto basement club, where her short-lived set of colourful, low-end club tracks stuck way out amongst the harder edged techno of the night. After that it was hard not to recruit her for a mix.

Honeydrip's Exclaim! Mix is an eclectic stroll through the carnival (cotton candy included). As Kenyan grime gives way to murky dub, which is then seamlessly blended with slick-as-a-whistle drum & bass, all before the 10-minute mark, it's clear that we're in for a broad assortment. Honeydrip does not disappoint in that department. As chopped-up pop vocals echo and off-beat percussion rolls around the floor, you'll be glad you stuck around for the whole thing. It's only 39 minutes after all. You have the time.

Scroll down for a link to the mix, as well as the tracklist, and some words from McLaughlan herself.

The theme I chose for this mix is 'Graduation,' which is why there is a ring-modulated audio from the 2019 valedictorian of my university in the intro. It has been a theme that has been on my mind lately since I recently had my convocation in November. The vocal excerpt says to focus on the now and music is one of the few things that doesn't have me stressing about my future. While making this mix and listening to it I don't have to think about anything else and I hope the people who will take the time to listen to it as well will get to stop and just live in the moment for 39 minutes. xo.
