Montreal-Nord-born producer and Exclaim! New Faves alum Gayance (aka Aïsha Vertus) has shared her debut single for new label Rhythm Section.
Translating to "never" in English, "Nunca Mais" follows her 2021 debut EP No Toning Down. Having begun a storied, globe-trotting DJ career in 2013, Vertus turned to producing her own music at a personal low point during the pandemic.
"This song was made at a moment when I was starting to set my boundaries in regard to how I was being treated by people who had patriarchal values," Vertus shared in a statement. "It's a freestyle made on a song I've co-produced with Amsterdam-based artist LAZA (United Identities, Stamp the Wax). In my freestyle, I sing with my heart in Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and English. For me, the only way to truly express emotions is by being multilingual. A reality I have as a Montreal born."
With a Detroit swing-inspired house groove, the track pays homage to the newly Amsterdam-based artist's "spiritual home" in Brazil, where she travelled for the eighth time to work on her forthcoming debut album after receiving her first grant.
