La Sécurité's Kenny Smith Drops New 'Polyurethane' EP as Pressure Pin

It was co-produced by bandmate Félix Bélisle (a.k.a. Standard Emmanuel)

Montreal's Pressure Pin — the artsy egg punk solo project of La Sécurité's Kenny Smith — returns today with the release of his second EP.

Polyurethane is out now via Mothland, following 2022's Superficial Feature. It was produced alongside Smith's La Sécurité bandmate Félix Bélisle (a.k.a. Standard Emmanuel) and features saxophone by Bélisle's Choses Sauvages bandmate, Marc-Antoine Barbier.

Here's what the singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist had to say about the four-track collection:

A lot of time, care and savings went into producing the EP. It's probably the most laborious thing I've created up until now. I've been working on these songs for about two years.

Typically, I would just sit down in my bedroom with a guitar and a basic 4-channel mixer. I used these to record 10-15 second "blocks" of song structures, then I edited them together how I saw fit. I have a pretty short attention span, and I find it hard to write entire songs in one sitting. Overdubs of other instruments came after. At the very end, I came up with lyrics and cadences to go over the final versions.

Standard Emmanuel (Félix Bélisle) produced the EP. It was recorded in a rehearsal space in Montreal with Félix manning the computer in the sound booth. Marc-Antoine Barbier also works with him, and played saxophone on the EP. I had the artwork done by a great band from London (ON) called Mononegatives who also make similar music. It's sort of inspired by '70s/'80s reinterpretations of Bauhaus art, board games, schematics, etc.

Hopefully, this record energizes its audience and inspires feelings of youthful vigour and confidence.
