Jean-Michel Blais Shares "mumures" Ahead of New Album

Forthcoming LP 'aubades' finds the pianist collaborating with an ensemble for the first time

Jean-Michel Blais has announced a new album with the arrival of single "murmures." The Montreal-based musician's latest, which he calls a tribute to influential composer Philip Glass, can be heard below.

"murmures" is the first song to arrive from Blais' forthcoming full-length album aubades, which will see release through Arts & Crafts.

While a release date and tracklist have yet to be revealed, aubades will follow the pianist's 2019 soundtrack for Xavier Dolan's Matthias et Maxime, and his 2018 Polaris Music Prize short listed LP, Dans ma main. The latter release landed among Exclaim!'s Top 10 Experimental & Modern Composition Albums of 2018.

A release notes that audbades marks the artist's transition from pianist to composer, as he collaborates and records with an ensemble for the first time in his career. Written during the pandemic and following a breakup, the album's title refers to the "aubade," a Middle-Ages morning love song about lovers separating at dawn.

Blais will also take aubades on the road in 2022, and as we await further details, you can find his tour dates here.
