Montreal-based musician Matt Rogers is best known as the lead vocalist of psych rockers Fleece — and, yes, one-half of the rice cake-munching duo whose Alt-J parody went viral in 2015 — and he's starting off 2021 by unveiling his new solo production project, it's matt. He's shared debut single "miss u tonight," featuring singer-songwriter Edwin Raphael.
Kicking off with a pitch-shifted vocal sample, the track features sparse guitar chords, bass synths and R&B vocal tradeoffs between Raphael's smooth falsetto and Rogers' straightforward delivery of the song's titular phrase. The result straddles the line between sensuous and longing.
Said Rogers in a statement, "Edwin and I have been calling the sound of this track 'spooky disco' — it's kinda emo, but it's also really dancey. Hoping this song gets people who are missing the dancefloor to shake their little booties at home, especially in this new curfew lockdown moment happening in Quebec."
Fleece spent 2020 releasing a trio of new singles, including "So Long." Raphael's forthcoming EP, Staring at Ceilings, is due on February 26 via Dine Alone Records.
