Donald Glover just got everyone's attention with his ultra-violent Childish Gambino video "This Is America," yet the actor/musician has said very little about the clip in the wake of its release this weekend. Now, he's broken his silence somewhat, and told us why he made the video — though in the most Donald Glover way possible.
While on the red carpet at the recent Met Gala this week, the folks over at E! attempted to grill Glover as to his motivations behind the conversation-stirring new video, and here's what he said:
I just wanted to make, you know, a good song. Something people could play on Fourth of July.
And with a sly smile, he left it at that.
If you've yet to watch the video for "This Is America," the Hiro Murai-directed clip is a seriously dark piece of work, with Glover shining a blistering light on America's gun control problem — not to mention its history with race and violence.
