Everybody loves Christmas, right? Not Mother Mother! The Vancouver TikTok sensations have shared the spooky new seasonal song "Cry Christmas," as well as a cover of the more subtly eerie "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
With ghostly harmonies and a stark arrangement driven by booming synth bass and jingling bells, singer Ryan Guldemond paints an unsettling portrait of a grim family gathering with a conspiracy theorist uncle and "OxyContin pumpkin pie." It turns into noisy robo-rock in the middle section.
Guldemond said in a statement, "'Cry Christmas' is a song that celebrates a feeling of irreverence or ambivalence about the holiday season. Many folks have a complicated relationship with Christmas and the holiday season, for various reasons. Ourselves included. We want our fans to know that they always have a seat at the table with us, no matter how we all feel at this time of year."
Hear it below, along with a horror movie rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Read Exclaim!'s recent Questionnaire interview with Guldemond here.
