Like it or not, the shock value once found in rock'n'roll is long gone at this point. This means that if you want some music that's really going to turn your head, you need to look elsewhere, like to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "WAP." for example. Just ask rock grandpa Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath.
The famed Sabbath bassist was quizzed about the 2020 megahit by Kerrang!, and while Butler admitted he was definitely too old to really understand "WAP," he did call the song "disgusting." He also drew a comparison to the initial reactions towards Black Sabbath, saying the response to "WAP" has been very much like when "Christians were going mental" when Sabbath first arrived.
"That's really about the fact that whatever new music comes out, it's viewed as the devil's music," Butler explained. "I remember when Elvis came out everybody said he was Satan. And then in the '60s and '70s he became America's national treasure.
"It happens with every new wave of music. Like metal, obviously. The Christians were going mental when Sabbath came about. And then when rap came about, people were up in arms about that and certain words that rappers were using. I have to say, though, that Cardi B pisses me off with that 'WAP' song. It's disgusting! But there you go."
For the unfamiliar, here are a few lines from "WAP" to see what Geezer finds so disgusting: "Bring a bucket and a mop for this wet-ass pussy / Give me everything you got for this wet-ass pussy," "Look, I need a hard hitter, I need a deep stroker / I need a Henny drinker, I need a weed smoker / Not a garden snake, I need a king cobra" and "Gobble me, swallow me, drip down the side of me / Quick, jump out 'fore you let it get inside of me."
Butler went on to say: "A friend of mine didn't know what the song was about, but his 10-year-old girl was singing it! I was like 'What?!' To put it on album, fair enough. But to put it out as a single? That's a it's a bit much. Then again, I'm 71. A bloody old goat!"
By the sounds of things, Butler has not seen the actual "WAP" video — but we're guessing that's probably for the best.
