As the third band to take the stage at Beatroute's annual hangover breakfast at Local 510, Faux Fur had a couple of tough acts to follow in Vancouverites Twin River and Pleasure Cruise. But these youngsters met the challenge admirably, gaining a few new fans in the process. Showing the influence of sadly defunct fellow Calgarians Women, Faux Fur played technically intricate, off-kilter guitar pop that at times bordered on math rock, accompanied by some understated but get-under-your-skin vocals. The songs themselves were remarkably sophisticated given the band's relatively tender years, making Faux Fur a clear highlight of Sled Island 2012 and a band to watch out for down the road.
