In a time when the representation of LGBTQ identities proves to be as important as ever, Netflix has unveiled its latest original documentary, Disclosure, which aims to tackle the topic of transgender and gender-nonconforming representation in film.

Transgender creatives and thinkers — including Laverne Cox, Matrix co-creator Lilly Wachowski, documentary filmmaker Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Sense8's Jamie Clayton and Hustlers star Trace Lysette, as well as Chaz Bono — lead the film's documentation of Hollywood's relationship to trans identities.

Today, Netflix has released the film's official trailer. During which, Cox is heard saying, "I never thought I'd live in a world where trans people would be celebrated — on or off the screen."

She adds: "I never thought the media would stop asking horrible questions and start treating us with respect," as Oprah Winfrey is heard brazenly asking a transgender woman, "How do you hide your penis?"

Directed by Sam Feder, Disclosure serves as "an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender."

The film will grapple with transgender representations in films like A Florida Enchantment, TangerineDog Day Afternoon, The Crying Game and Boys Don't Cry, as well as TV series such as Euphoria, The OA, The Jeffersons, The L-Word and Pose, as it traces "a history that is at once dehumanizing, yet also evolving, complex, and sometimes humorous."

The official synopsis describes the film as follows:

[Disclosure isa fascinating story of dynamic interplay between trans representation on screen, society's beliefs, and the reality of trans lives. Reframing familiar scenes and iconic characters in a new light, director Sam Feder invites viewers to confront unexamined assumptions, and shows how what once captured the American imagination now elicit new feelings. Disclosure provokes a startling revolution in how we see and understand trans people.

In celebration of Pride Month, the film will be released on June 19 on the streaming platform. Its release follows a number of controversial statements circling in the public sphere after Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling unleashed a number of problematic statements about transgender and nonbinary activism.
