YOB

"Unmask the Spectre"

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Aug 11, 2014

YOB announced a while back that they're Clearing the Path to Ascend with an album of the same name this September. While that means there's still about a month to go before the Oregon gloomsmiths give us the goods in full, they've revealed a haunting preview of what's to come with their "Unmask the Spectre."

An eerily tranquil trickle of guitar, cymbal taps and sinisterly shushed lines from Mike Scheidt usher us into the 15-minute epic, but the vocalist's death rattle soon rises into a grizzly growl once the band rips into an amp-cranking assault. The tune bludgeons with granite-thick guitar riffs and the slow-mo drum damage, but also balances the wrecking ball approach with some equally disturbing bass drones and wind sounds.

Scheidt had previously explained that the record "has some real beauty and light," and you can sample some of it down below via Stereogum before Neurot Recordings puts the LP in stores September 2.
