Earlier this month, the Weeknd announced his intention to "kill" his stage name, and officially changed his social media accounts to his birth name, Abel Tesfaye. The decision has been getting plenty of reactions online, as fans say goodbye to the Weeknd era and usher in the Abel Tesfaye era.

To his credit, the artist seems to be taking the ensuing memes in stride, responding with a laughing emoji in a quote-tweet of a post that reads, "The assistant in the record store when I ask if they have any Abel Tesfaye albums in stock," with a video of Lady Gaga performing "Babylon" singing "we only have the weekend." See the tweet below.

Upon revealing the imminent death of the Weeknd, the Torontonian pop star stated in an interview with W Magazine, "As the Weeknd, I've said everything I can say," adding that the album he's currently working on will be his last using the moniker.

The name change comes as he continues his foray into acting, with the release of his HBO show The Idol set to premiere on Max starting June 4. The show drops amid controversy that the production has delved into "torture porn" territory.
