In a collision of dynamic duos, Edmonton's Purity Ring and Toronto's Black Dresses have released a new collaborative single called "shines."
Multiple parts of that sentence may be cause for confusion, since the former unit's 2012 album is similarly titled Shrines, and the latter supposedly broke up back in 2020 (but Ada Rook and Devi McCallion have gone on to release two more albums together, so who knows). But it's true! It arrives via the Alberta-hailing pair's own label, the Fellowship.
This marks the first new music for both duos since 2022, when Purity Ring released graves and Black Dresses put out Forget Your Own Face. Combining Black Dresses' noisy experimental textures and Purity Ring's glossy, saccharine synths, the resultant song is a hyperpop opus that dwells in chaos. Listening to "shines" pretty much allows you to experience being both the tentacled alien creature and the fresh, rosy baby depicted in the single artwork.
