Neil Young has taken to his usual post at the Neil Young Archives' Times Contrarian to send out his latest old-timey dispatch: the troubadour has announced Noise & Flowers, a live album and accompanying concert film, due August 5.
Recorded during his 2019 European tour with Promise of the Real, he's previewing the audio-visual venture with a performance of "From Hank to Hendrix." Young also wrote about the circumstances surrounding that particular tour, which happened just after the death of his lifelong manager and best friend, Elliot Roberts.
"Promise of the Real and I had a tour planned of Europe," the artist wrote in his latest Contrarian instalment. "D and I were on the bus, on our way to catch a plane to Europe... when I got the call."
He explained that they went home for Roberts's funeral before carrying on overseas. "During the tour, we had a poster of Elliot on a road case, where he always stood during all shows," Young continued. "Everyone who was with us felt that this tour was amazing for its great vibe. The Real and I delivered for Elliot."
Noise & Flowers draws from performances during various shows on the nine-city tour, combining fan favourites ("Alabama," "I've Been Waiting for You," "Winterlong") and the hits ("Rockin' in the Free World," "Helpless"). Notably, the tracklist also includes a very rare electric version of "On the Beach" from the gig in Antwerp, Belgium. Young has performed the song just four times in the past 47 years, and only once with a full band.
Elsewhere in his NYA post, the singer-songwriter describes the live album and film as a "great collection, dripping with the soul of our band as we played for our fallen leader."
Young hasn't toured since 2019 and said last December that he doesn't plan to until we "beat" COVID-19.
