MSTRKRFT/DFA1979's Jesse F. Keeler Curates New Mortal Kombat Soundtrack

It was a miracle that no one was seriously hurt in the riot that took place at rock duo Death From Above 1979's reunion gig last weekend at SXSW. But while the band did their best to cool down the situation in Austin, bassist Jesse F. Keeler is hoping to crack some skulls with his latest project: a new soundtrack for legendary videogame Mortal Kombat.

A press release explains that Keeler is the executive producer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Songs Inspired by the Warrior soundtrack. The set will be released April 5 on WaterTown Music/Teenage Riot Records and precedes an updated re-launch of the Mortal Kombat game, which comes out April 19.

Recalling his house-tinged MSTRKRFT work more than DFA1979, Keeler flexes his electronic music muscle on the album, contributing "Deathstalker (Scorpion's Theme)." Other artists include Felix Cartal and screamo-kid-turned-dubstepper Skrillex, who is apparently a big fan of the fighting series.

"I've been a Mortal Kombat fan since Mortal Kombat 2 came out on Sega Genesis," Skrillex said in a statement. "This was completely a passion project for me, and I'm so honoured to be a part of the Mortal Kombat legacy!"

Keeler was not only excited to contribute to the soundtrack so he could unveil a new tune, but also because of the unique crossover potential of the project.

"It's always exciting to have the opportunity to write music for something outside of the traditional means, especially when it is for a project like Mortal Kombat that has had such pop cultural significance for so long," Keeler said. "It's a great step forward for the ways that videogames can interact with music across unique genres and mediums."
