Camae Ayewa has detailed a new album as Moor Mother. The American poet, composer, and singer-songwriter will share Jazz Codes on July 1 via ANTI.
Jazz Codes is said to be a companion to Moor Mother's 2021 LP Black Encyclopedia of the Air, and is described in a release as a 21-track "warm, densely layered course through jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop."
Ayewa shares in a statement that above all else, "It's poetry that drives this album. The stories of these artists and countless others not named but felt — is the leading motivation. I wanted to honour and give offerings, hold them in my body, dream with them, send sweetness."
Appearing in the album's tracklist are Mary Lattimore, AKAI SOLO, Fatboi Sharif, Yung Morpheus, Orion Sun, Wolf Weston, Keir Neuringer, Justmadnice Ayewa's Black Quantum Futurism collective partner Rasheedah Phillips and more.
The Melanie Charles-assisted "WOODY SHAW" arrives alongside today's album news, and can be heard below alongside a video filmed in the Leimert Park, Los Angeles, headquarters of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. The Black music ensemble was founded in 1961 by Horace Tapscott, with the goal of fostering a community orchestra in the city's South Central region.
As previously reported, Moor Mother will play this year's Montreal Jazz Festival, running from June 30 to July 9. In May, she released Nothing to Declare as one half of 700 Bliss, her duo with DJ Haram.
