Travis Stewart has detailed his eleventh LP as Machinedrum. The American producer will share new album 3FOR82 on May 24 via Ninja Tune.
Stewart's first Machinedrum LP since 2020's A View of U, the 12-track 3FOR82 follows last year's 4#TRAX EP.
The new album is said to build on the vocalist-centric nature of the former release, with guest appearances from Tinashe, Mick Jenkins, KUČKA, Tanerélle, Duckwrth, aja monet, Deniro Farrar, Topaz Jones, AKTHESAVIOR, Ezri, deem spencer and ROZET.
A release reveals that, musically, the making of 3FOR82 began a year ago today with a trip Stewart took to California's Joshua Tree National Park. Seeking clarity and inspiration, the artist took time out of the trip to comb through old hard drives of early electronic creations made with freeware music sequencer Impulse Tracker.
Stewart then adapted those ideas for the material of 3FOR82, using a DOS emulator to run Impulse Tracker and use its technological limitations to tap into a "unique creativity." He explains of that process, "From there, there was no going back. It bridged the gap between my past and future self."
The Tinashe-assisted "ZOOM" is the first song to arrive from the album, and as you'll hear below, the vocalist and producer have picked up right where the former's BB/ANG3L EP left off, making melodic magic at high tempos.
Stewart has a series of DJ sets and live audiovisual performances lined up for the coming months, including Canadian shows in Toronto and Montreal, and a festival set at Bass Coast 2024 in Merritt, BC. You can find his complete tour itinerary below, with DJ sets and live A/V sets clearly marked.
