LAL Declare "I Am Goddess" in New Video

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 10, 2020

Electronic duo LAL released their latest album Dark Beings last year, and now "I Am Goddess" from that record has been treated to a music video.

The song is told from the perspective of a gender-neutral Mother Earth speaking to humanity, reminding us to protect our planet.

The accompanying video was directed by queer Black artist Tiana Smith, and it presents an inclusive idea of what it means to be a "goddess."

"I wanted to reassure that the individuals that happen to see this video understand that even though the mainstream media tries to hide us, and make us feel unworthy, we are important, alive, and still here," Smith explains. "Visibility for BIPOC exists beyond the limits of a month, a week or even a day. As a person of color you are a goddess, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community you are a goddess, as a person living with a disability you are a goddess, as a gender non-conforming person you are a goddess."

She continues, "In a sense the statement is describing being worthy, and having importance. 'I Am Goddess' is an aim to showcase the different ways that anybody can be represented. The video reflects who we are as a community, puts an emphasis on chosen family, and highlights the people that we want, and need to see more of in this industry."
