With a new single, label home and tour details, it's safe to say Kassa Overall is "Ready to Ball." Today, the Seattle-based drummer, producer and emcee has shared his latest via the storied Warp Records, and you can hear it below.
"Ready to Ball" finds the multihyphenate observing a world "in love with the shiny things" amid shifty percussion and gleaming piano.
"On an emotional level, the song is really dealing with feelings of jealousy. It's also an affirmation, to not get lost in the hustle of upward mobility," the artist explains. "How bad do we want the shiny things? How much will we bend ourselves to get them? At times I feel like, damn bro, it's so much of a struggle and a hustle to just keep it going that I don't have time to make sure my mental health and my soul is cool. That's basically the polarity right there."
"Ready to Ball" lands following the February arrival of SHADES 3 — the third instalment in the artist's SHADES OF FLU mixtape series — and 2020 LP I THINK I'M GOOD, which saw release via Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings.
Kassa Overall has also mapped out headlining tour plans. Following May dates in support of venerable hip-hop trio Digable Planets, the artist will play 10 North American shows, including a lone Canadian stop at Toronto's TD Music Hall.
