Drummer turned solo artist Kassa Overall is about to release an album through Warp Records, and he has recruited some notable contributors for his new single: Lil B, Shabazz Palaces, and Francis and the Lights, all of whom appear on "Going Up."
The song highlights Kassa Overall's roots behind the kit, beginning with a whirlwind of rhythmic complexity. From there, it downshifts into a groovier, more atmospherically soulful feel. The inclusion of Shabazz Palaces is notable for Kassa, who grew up as a big fan of the group's Ishmael Butler, and even attended the same high school (Seattle's Garfield High School).
Kassa Overall's album ANIMALS drops this Friday (May 26). "Going Up" is the closing track.
Kassa's 2023 tour includes a Toronto show on June 8, and appearances at the Montreal Jazz Festival (July 6) and Calgary Folk Festival (July 28). See his schedule here.
