Hiroshima-born, Montreal-based songwriter Jonah Yano made one of the best Canadian albums you might have missed in 2020 with souvenir, and now he's set to follow it up with portrait of a dog, produced by BADBADNOTGOOD. It's out January 27 through Innovative Leisure.
The album is said to continue Yano's exploration of family and identity within the Japanese-Canadian diaspora. A press release calls it a "clear departure from Yano's previous recordings." The whole album was produced by BBNG, with whom Yano has collaborated in the past, and has feature appearances from Sea Oleena and Slauson Malone.
A taste of the album can be found in the newly shared singles "always" and "the speed of sound!" Yano has also shared a video for the soulful, jazzy "always," which uses a clever sped-up effect to show Yano walking through Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy.
